The Klickitat County Fair finished up its 80th-year last week in Goldendale. During the fair they dedicated the new Elennor Duley livestock barn, market livestock sale and the NPRA rodeo. One of the exhibits this year that raised attention with our kids in agriculture was the Hay and Grain King Contest. In this contest a bale of hay or a gallon of grain is entered by the landowner or the person participating in harvest. This year the top 3 spots in the Grain King contest were won by 3 youth participants, with a total age of 5 years, 6 months. Renzie Powers, 1 month old, of Powers ranches was the Grain King or in his case the Grain Prince. Renzie took his first ride in the combine at 1 week of age. The Powers Ranch won with a Winter, soft white wheat and is the 2nd year to hold this title. Jim Jack Davenport of Davenport Land and Cattle took class champion with his Spring, soft white wheat and his daughter Laney Davenport, 5 months, brought home the Judges Choice with her soft white wheat. Grant Amidon of Amidon Ranches, 5 years old, brought home Reserve Champion honors in the Spring, soft white wheat class. They are starting these kids out right; all took a ride in the combine or wheat truck during harvest. In the Hay King contest, Dale Thiele of Thiele Ranches took home the Hay King honor, adding to his collections of this title. Dale’s final score to take the win was a 97.38 out of 100 on a non-irrigated, 2nd cutting alfalfa bale with a RFV of 205.09. Dale is the great grandpa of Laney Davenport. This year brought 4 generations of farmers into our competition
